Introduction : Maluku




Long ago, Maluku were known as the Spice Island. As the world's only sources of nutmeg, mace and the cloves. The region was constantly fought over by the Spanish, Dutch and Portuguese. The city of Ambon, the Provincial capital is also an important stop in the annual Darwin Ambon Yacht race held in August.


From tiny Ternate and Tidore in the north to the Banda mini-archipelago, the remains of ancient strongholds stand as reminder of the nation's rivarly over the island's control and are fascinating to explore, such as Fort Duurnstede on Saparua, Fort Belgica and Fort Nassau in Banda Neira, Concordia and Hollandia on Lontar Island and Fort Revingil on Ai Island. The Rumah Budaya Museum in Banda Neira hold many historical artifact and a church has stone-slab graves inscribed with names Dutch colonialists.

Today, Maluku also welcomes visitors who come to explore its beautiful natural wonders. The Banda Islands consist of 10 volcanic island. The volcano" Gunung Api " is a favorite destination for hikers. A hike to the summit is rewarded with a spectacular view of the surrounding depp blue seas. Frozen lava stream from the volcano's last eruption in the 1980 can still be seen flowing toward the sea. In April or October, kora-kora canoes race on the waters between Neira and Gunung Api.

The Banda Sea that surrounds the islands of Maluku are a divers paradise.Warm water, good visibility and strong currents create exciting drift dive that reveal an untouched world under the sea. In the small archipelago in the Banda Sea, the depp seas teem with coral and marine life and idyllic surroundings are also perfect for water sport such as seasonal fishing and windsurfing. Around Ambon alone 780 species of fish has been identified

Sand, Sea and Sunshine
 The Maluku islands are endowed with some of the most picturesque beach scenery. Powder white beaches are found in the Kai Islands, in  northern Halmahera and in the islands in the bay of Tobelo. The beaches on Ternate and Tidore are mostly of black volcanic sand. Visit Pulau Pombo & Pulau Kasa Marine Reserves and Banda Island Marine Reserve for the best diving and snorkling
