Sumatra : Ulee Lheue Village, Aceh



Ulee Lheue is one of the villages located in Meuraxa sub district, Banda Aceh. Its potential tourism object is Ulee Lheue coastal tourism area. This village is the most destructed area of tsunami disaster since the location is the closest to the shoreline.



Nature Tourism

Ulee Lheue, Aceh is a tourism area badly affected by 2004 tsunami. Ulee Lheue is located in the foreshore, thus almost all the village area were covered by the high waves when the tsunami stroke. Ulee Lheue owns a harbor that becomes a facility for the tourist to reach Weh Island at the tip of Sumatra island. When the tide is low, corals would appear on the coastal water and in the distance there appear beautifully hilly panorama. At the distance, there is also a 100 meter destroyed lighthouse leaving only the pillars. Visitors may also enjoy this calm water beach by fishing coral fish like grouper or rambe ( Indian Thread Fish ). Moreover, for the fishing addict, they can coordinate with local fisherman to borrow or rent a boat for sea fishing.

Historical Tourism

One historical sight in Ulee Lheue is the Mass Grave. It is located in Jalan Pucot Baren No. 30, in the yard of the former building of RSUD Meurexa. This cemetery accommodates approximately 14.264 casualties buried within a single huge hole without any gravestones. There is only an iron signboard telling the location of both cemetery for adult and children. When Idul Fitri comes, Ulee Lheue mass burial site will be full of visitors not only tourist, but also the family of the casualties. They pray for the tsunami victims. Beside praying, they also lay a wreath at this location.

How To Get There

We can reach it within 20 minutes by various transportation since it is not far from Banda Aceh. If visitors use private vehicles, from downtown Aceh they can traverse Jalan Sultan Iskandar Muda to Ulee Lheue harbor. When approaching the sea, before Ulee Lheue roundabout, visitors will find Jalan Pocut Baren to the left side of the road. They just need to pass Jalan Pocut Baren and they can see Ulee Lheue mass burial on its left side.
